What does your remote company do?
Toggl Plan is a web-based solution for task scheduling, project planning, and team management. Users create and schedule tasks using a drag-and-drop interface, producing a color-coded timeline of the work to be completed. Boards view helps track progress and prioritize without focusing on time estimations.
Did you start with a remote team or switched later to remote?
We started to hire for remote positions to access the larger talent pool. Without means to relocate every prospective candidate to Estonia, and with very little patience regarding the red tape it entails, going remote was the only real option.
After testing it on one team, we knew it was a perfect solution.
What do you think are the biggest benefits of remote work?
We've seen that happy people produce the most efficient and creative results. Also, life is messy, dogs need to be walked during the day and there are so many places to see in the world. That's why we offer flexibility, a results-driven working environment and opportunities for personal growth.

What are you looking for in a good remote jobs candidate?
We know that remote work isn't for everyone. We're looking for people who are self-motivated and who aren't afraid to take chances. And although results matter, we also believe in making mistakes, failing fast and moving forward.
How does your remote company's hiring process for remote jobs look like?
It's no secret a CV doesn't really say anything about a person. So we decided to skip that step. Instead, we use short skills tests to find the best candidates without skimming through piles of paper.
A remote work environment doesn't suit everyone. Therefore, we interview prospective candidates and offer the top prospects a paid test drive. This gives potential team members the chance to show off their skills and collaborate with our team.

Where does your remote team work from?
We work from homes, coworking spaces, cafes or where ever we feel most comfortable and productive.
Does your remote team meet in person?
We meet up at least twice a year to have some quality face-to-face time, get to know each other better and make memories.

How do you communicate in your remote team?
We usually start and end the day with greetings and goodbyes via Slack. There's plenty of discussions and important information moving around there also, but no one is expected to instantly reply to anything.
There are also weekly team meetings and campfires. In the latter the whole company comes together and learns something new together.

What's your advice for companies planning to go remote?
First, we make sure people can and do take ownership of their work. Teams have the tools they need to succeed and are actively involved in decision-making.
We also place heavy emphasis on communication. We discuss everything openly and honestly and expect team members to share plans, favorite memes, successes, failures, lessons learned and anything in between.
Finally, trust is key. Trust is earned when actions meet words. We believe that done is better than perfect and expect people to stick to deadlines and follow-through on projects. Because we trust people to do their jobs, we don’t need to micromanage or impose endless rules and guidelines.
